The Neuromuscular Programs and Clinics

The Neuromuscular Programs and Clinics is a dedicated division specializing in the diagnosis and care of patients suffering with diseases of peripheral nerves, muscles, neuromuscular junction and the motor neurons. These include Myopathy, Myositis, Muscular Dystrophy, Myasthenia Gravis, Lambert-Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease), Neuropathy, Radiculopathy and Plexopathy, and other genetic and acquired nerve and muscle disorders. Many of these disorders are acquired during adult life, but some are hereditary and may present in childhood. The doctors in the Neuromuscular Division of the Department of Neurology evaluate and treat both children and adults with neuromuscular disorders.

Dr. Katalin Scherer is the director of the Neuromuscular Division. She is a fellowship-trained subspecialist in Neuromuscular Disorders and is board certified in Electrodiagnostic Medicine. Dr Scherer's clinics are located at the Neurology Clinic at University Physicians Healthcare Hospital, 2800 E Ajo Way. Clinics include a general neuromuscular clinic, an MDA sponsored neuromuscular and myasthenia clinic, and the MDA/ALS center’s multidisciplinary clinic. The MDA sponsored clinics provides team-oriented evaluation and treatment for muscular dystrophies, hereditary neuropathies, motor neuron disorders, disorders of the neuromuscular junction, and myopathies. Dr. Scherer also sees pediatric neuromuscular patients at the CCRS/MDA Neuromuscular Clinic at 2600 N. Wyatt Drive.

The Neuromuscular Clinics emphasize a multidisciplinary team approach to patient diagnosis and care. Both clinical and research pursuits are ongoing and Dr Scherer provides training for medical students, residents and fellows.
