Behavioral Neurology

Advisors: Geoffrey L. Ahern, MD, PhD and Steven Z. Rapcsak, MD

During this one year fellowship, the fellow will receive training in both the theoretical aspects and practical techniques of behavioral neurology. Time will be spent at both the Behavioral Neuroscience and Alzheimer's Clinic at University Medical Center (Dr. Ahern) and the Behavioral Neurology / Dementia Clinic and NeuroGeriatric Ward at the Tucson VA Medical Center (Dr. Rapcsak). Clinical material will include: Alzheimer's Disease and other dementias, behavioral consequences of stroke (particularly aphasia and hemispatial neglect), head injury and epilepsy; adult learning disabilities and adult Attention Deficit Disorder; behavioral aspects of movement disorders (Parkinson's disease, Tourette's syndrome, etc.); and atypical psychiatric disorders. The fellow will be expected to participate in ongoing research studies (see Clinical Research Studies) and generate at least one research paper. Additional opportunities include: participation in Wada tests, mapping of eloquent regions via electrocortical stimulation, Amytal interviews, and observation of neuropsychological testing (Drs. Herring and Kaszniak).

Cerebrovascular Disease

Advisors: Bruce M. Coull, MD, Jeremy R. Payne, MD, PhD

The fellow will obtain both clinical and research experience in cerebrovascular disease in this one year fellowship. He/she will work closely with Drs. Coull and Payne in the context of the Comprehensive Stroke Program and well as on the Ward and Consult services. Research opportunities in the laboratories of Drs. Coull and/or Payne will be available. Additional experiences will be available in carotid and transcranial doppler techniques, as well as angiography and magnetic resonance angiography. Participation in Clinical Research Studies is expected.

Epilepsy

Advisor: David M. Labiner, MD, Hemant Kudrimoti MD, PhD, Myrka Torres, MD

The fellow will be a participating physician in the Arizona Comprehensive Epilepsy Program (ACEP). This one-year long experience will include the evaluation and treatment of patients with epilepsy, both in the outpatient and inpatient settings. The fellow may also elect to spend time working in Pediatric Neurology Clinic. The fellow will be involved in the selection and evaluation of patients for epilepsy surgery and will become proficient in the analysis of video-EEG monitoring studies, neuroimaging techniques, and quantitative EEG analysis during the Wada test. The fellow will participate in trials of investigational drugs and other clinical research (see Clinical Research Studies). In addition, there are opportunities for basic research in the areas of cellular neurophysiology and molecular biology with an emphasis on the development of novel therapeutic approaches.

Neuromuscular Disease and Clinical Neurophysiology

Advisor: Katalin Scherer, MD

The emphasis of this one-year long fellowship is the acquisition of a high degree of clinical and technical competence evaluating patients with neuromuscular disorders by means of history, neurological examination, electromyography and nerve conduction studies. In general, the spectrum of patients seen will include those with peripheral nerve, motor neuron, neuromuscular junction, and muscle diseases. Fellows will also gain exposure and experience in EMG guided chemodenervation. The principal supervisor will be Dr Katalin Scherer, MD Fellows will also attend the MDA Clinic (with Dr Scherer, and with Dr Lawrence Stern, MDA clinic director.)

Clinical Neurophysiology

Advisor: Colin R. Bamford, MD

This one-year fellowship is intended to provide the fellow with excellent technical training in EEG, EMG/NCV, neurometry, and somatosensory evoked potentials. Besides routine outpatient studies, the fellow will also participate in on-call inpatient EMG and electrodiagnostic studies in the operating room as they arise.
